The Insomniac Net is held every night of the year (including holidays) and has been very popular for over 25 years.  Each night there is a different net control operator.  Generally, they have three or four trivia questions with 2 multiple choice answers.  Roll call of the regular night owl members is called, then a special call for visitors and guests is presented.   The original frequency was 144.330 simplex, however, nowadays, all the Net Control Operators have upgraded to 70 cm and are using the K6JSI Western Intertie Network (WIN) System.  With the WIN System we are getting "check-ins" from Sacramento CA to Rosarito Beach, Mexico.

The WIN System also connects us to the Internet Relay Linking Project (IRLP) via the Nevada Amateur Radio Repeaters, Inc (NARRI) Reflector 9253, (Channel 3), in Las Vegas and regularly gets check-ins from Sydney and Perth Australia, Juneau AK, Vancouver BC, Houston TX, Phoenix AZ, Salt Lake City UT, Omaha NE and many other stations.  Recently we have been hearing from stations in South Africa and Guam.

Meet the Net Control Operators

MONDAY NIGHT Net Control Operator
Herb N6MGW is located in Los Alamitos and is transmitting on a 50 watt Kenwood FM Dual Bander TM G707 with a j-pole antenna up about 25 ft.  With his dual bander, Herb has upgraded to the K6JSI remote base located on Catalina Island and Santiago Peak and can be hear from Bakersfield, CA, to Rosario Beach Mexico.  Herb has a cat called Scratch and together they usually have a famous quote about cats just to upset the Sunday night mascot, Mosley, a K9MUT.  In recent years, Herb has been playing his clarinet in several symphonic bands and orchestras in the southland.

TUESDAY NIGHT Net Control Operator
Tom K6TAV and Baxter K9DOG, a Chocolate Lab that is usually lying on my feet under the desk, live at the Southern most and lowest point in Fountain Valley. They are at an elevation of -3 feet according to the GPS, next to the Flood control channel. Tom has a Comet 2m/220 on a mast on the roof about 25 feet above ground.  His rig is a Yaesu  FT-2600M at 50 watts for the net. Most of the time he can hear about 90% of the Net check-ins.  The rest of his shack consists of a Kenwood TS-930S into a Cushcraft R-7 Vertical. There are also 3 computers networked to a Cable Modem.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT Net Control Operator
Shorty K6JSI and his Remote Base WIN System has been a savior for the Insomniac Net by brining in members from all over California, and more recently the IRLP.  If you are in the LA Basin, San Diego, or Bakersfield, you can tune into the Insomniac Net with a 440 rig.  Check out the WIN System http://www.WinSystem.org   With the Win System's connection to the IRLP, we are frequently getting people checking in from Australia, England, and Canada.  They have great simplex signals on 2 meters.

THURSDAY NIGHT Net Control Operator (First Alternate)
John KO6WI and his dog Mosley, K9MUT, are back as the Sunday Night Net Controller. They are located in North Long Beach, CA.  He uses a tall vertical antenna on 50 Watts.  John is the last of the Net Control operators to upgrade to 70 cm and is now using the K6JSI Remote Base WIN System graciously provided by Shorty.  Usually Mosley K9MUT, the Dog, is responsible for one of the questions so don't blame John.   ( Tip; Mosley hates cats. )  You can visit John KO6WI and Mosley K9MUT at their web site http://www.halling.com/ko6wi/

THURSDAY NIGHT Net Control Operator (Second Alternate)
Susi, WA6DKS (Dirty Kitchen Sink) alternates with John on Thursday nights and this picture was taken at HRO's BBQ.   Notice the GREEEAAAT American Flag shirt, I wonder if she wants to sell it?   Susi is working through the K6JSI Win system using a Kenwood TM-742 and a Cometn CX-333 Antenna.  Her HAM Shack includes 6 radios including a Heathkit SB 102 she built 35 years ago.  Susi has assumed the roll of testing and certifying all the Net Control Operators to see if we still have mental capabilities.  Susi has two adult children with HAM tickets, Cat KG6PPA and her son Phil KG6MB that lives in Santa Cruz.

FRIDAY NIGHT Net Control Operator

Roger KF6HBU and June KG6JJM are the Net Control Operators for Friday night and operate from sunny San Diego using the K6JSI WIN  System.  With this setup Roger gets check-ins from all over Southern California and some Central California.  When the IRLP is connected Roger and June hear from HAMs all over the world.  Roger just joined the ranks of Retired Hams and is having a ball with the Insomniac Net.  Sometimes he checks if from the Far East -- Arizona -- while visiting Chicago Bob KC9AJY.

SATURDAY NIGHT Net Control Operator
Terry, N6WI, is our senior net control operator and located in La Habra. Terry transmits using 1 watt on a GP-3 Antenna up 20 ft through the K6JSI remote base.  Terry runs a wonderful family web site Located at http://www.thedeanfamily.com and usually has some enlightening thoughts.  He would like you to visit.   (TRIVIA QUESTION How come Terry is the senior Net Control Operator and doesn't have silver hair?)

SUNDAY NIGHT Net Control Operator
Paul, W6PMH, is the Thursday night net control operator. He talks into the WIN System Santiago repeater using a Kenwood TM-G707 as a base station and a Comet CX-333 antenna, and you'll usually find him running about 10 Watts.  Paul is currently a student at Mt. Night Owls

The Monday Night Net roll call check in list consists of; Night Owls, Visiting and Guest Night Owls, and Spotted Owls

Night Owls are those that have checked in regularly in the last 2 or 3 weeks and are welcome to check in anytime they have insomnia.  They will be on the regular roll call "check in" list until they miss 2 consecutive nets.  At that point they will be dropped from the regular roll call list until they once again check in as a guest or visitor.  All new Night Owls are added to the bottom of the list and move up the list as older night owls leave the nest.  We do this to keep the size of the list manageable and keep the length of the net under an hour.

Visitor and Guest Night Owls are those that are not on the regular Monday Night roll call list and wish to check in with or without answers.  If you are late and did not hear the questions, you are encouraged to; ask for a reading of the questions, take someone else's answers, or just ask for a check in.  At this time you will be added to the regular list of Night Owls and will be called the on the next Monday Night Net.

Spotted Owls are considered endangered species and Spotted Owl Awards given to those that get all their answers wrong.  It is a polite way of telling people they blew it.

MONTHLY AWARDS
Monthly awards have been discontinued for lack of time.

At the end of every month those with a significant number of correct answers will receive special recognition both on the net and on this web site.  Those with the most correct answers will be recognized as the Spectacled Night Owl of the month.  Those that declare and strive for low answers will be recognized as the Burrowing Night Owl of the month.   If you fail to get any questions correct on any night, you will get the Spotted Owl Award.

Spectacled Owl, Burrowing Owl and the hated Spotted Owl

Monthly awards have been suspended, but you can still be a night owl
