Get Tonight's Insomniac Net Questions & Answers
The Insomniac Net is held every night of the year (including holidays) and has been very popular for over 26 years. Each night there is a different net control operator. Generally, they have three or four trivia questions with 2 multiple choice answers. Roll call of the regular night owl members is called, then a special call for visitors and guests is presented. The original frequency was 144.330 simplex, however, nowadays, all the Net Control Operators have upgraded to 70 cm and are using the K6JSI Western Intertie Network (WIN) System. With the WIN System we are getting "check-ins" from Anchorage AK to Rosarito Beach, Mexico.
The WIN System also connects us to the Internet Radio Linking Project (IRLP) via the Lone Star Repeater in Dallas TX Reflector 9453, (Channel 3), of the North Texas Repeater Association, and regularly gets check-ins from Sydney and Perth Australia, Juneau AK, Vancouver BC, Houston TX, Phoenix AZ, Salt Lake City UT, Omaha NE and many other stations. Recently we have been hearing from stations in England, South Africa, Guam and China. With Terry, N6WI, moving to Berryville, AR, we now have our Senior Net Control Operator in Arkansas.

Meet the Net Control Operators
MONDAY NIGHT Net Control Operator
Herb N6MGW is located in Los Alamitos and is transmitting on a 50 watt Kenwood FM Dual Bander Kenwood TM-G707 with a j-pole antenna up about 30 ft. With his dual bander, Herb has upgraded to the K6JSI remote base located on Catalina Island and Santiago Peak and can be heard from Bakersfield, CA, to Rosario Beach Mexico. Herb has had a number of cats that are now silent keys because of coyotes in his area.. His new cat, Golden, is shown on the right and together they usually have a famous quote about cats just to upset the K9MUTS on frequency. In recent years, Herb has been playing his clarinet in several symphonic bands and orchestras in the southland and has 5 internet businesses including an oxygen bar that keeps him very busy.
TUESDAY NIGHT Net Control Operator
Big Al is our newest Net Control operator taking over for Tom on Tuesday nights. Big Al has some big shoes to fill as Tom was known for having some of the most challenging question. Big Al is located in Chula Vista, just north of Tijuana. Thus we frequently say he is in Chulajuana. In the photo, Big Al is doing the net from the his favorite seat....The Motor Home. Yep, that's what Big Al loves to do the most; hit the road in the motor home and being with the grand kids. He operates the net on his 14 year old

Kenwood 733A putting out enough watts to hit Otay repeater. Well heck, it's only 7 miles away. Most other times he will be on his Kenwood TH6 or Yaseau FT60 and you can bet he will be listening to his Uniden 396 or 996.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT Net Control Operator
Shorty K6JSI and his Remote Base WIN System has been a savior for the Insomniac Net by brining in members from all over California, and more recently the IRLP. If you are in the LA Basin, San Diego, or Bakersfield, you can tune into the Insomniac Net with a 440 rig. Check out the WIN System http://www.WinSystem.org With the Win System's connection to the IRLP, we are frequently getting people checking in from Australia, England, and Canada. They have great simplex signals on 2 meters.
THURSDAY NIGHT Net Control Operator
Terry, N6WI, is our senior net control operator and formally located in La Habra. Terry has retired and moved to Berryville, AR and runs the net via the IRLP. Terry runs a wonderful family web site Located at http://www.thedeanfamily.com and usually has some enlightening thoughts. He would like you to visit. (TRIVIA QUESTION How come Terry is the senior Net Control Operator and doesn't have silver hair?)
FRIDAY NIGHT Net Control Operator
Tom, K6TAV is one of our favorite net control operators because he has some of the most interesting nets. When there is a 5th Friday in the month, we get to ask him a question. To everyone's amazement, Tom usually gets about 90% of the questions correct. It seems the only questions he misses are sports trivia questions. Tom is a graduate of Norte Dam and he usually has fun with Herb N6MGW when the USC/ND game comes to town.. Tom is located in Fountain Valley and is transmitting on a 50 watt Kenwood FM Dual Bander Kenwood TM-G707. Tom can hit most the WIN System repeaters in the LA basin.
SATURDAY NIGHT Net Control Operator
Steve N5ZUA is one of our newest Net Control Operators and located in Addicks, a small suburb about 20 miles west of Houston, Texas. Steve is using a Kenwood TMD700 radio which he uses to conduct the Net via his IRLP node 3486 via the Internet. Steve has been a regular net member for over 5 years, and started as a substitute net controller 3 years ago. He is a WIN System Member, and tries to make it to at least one system event in California each year when he is on vacation. Steve likes to dabble in building repeaters as well as EchoIRLP nodes. He currently owns 14 nodes, and 5 repeaters on the Saltgrass Link System, which has over one dozen repeaters in southeast Texas and is a system similar to the WIN System. Steve can frequently be found on the WIN System when he is not dispatching trains between Houston and San Antonio for the Union Pacific Railroad. He also says that everything is bigger in Texas, including the spotted owls!
SUNDAY NIGHT Net Control Operator
Roger KF6HBU and June KG6JJM are the Net Control Operators for Sunday night and
operate from sunny San Diego using the K6JSI WIN System. With this setup Roger gets check-ins from all over Southern California and some Central California. When the IRLP is connected Roger and June hear from HAMs all over the world. Roger just joined the ranks of Retired Hams and is having a ball with the Insomniac Net. Sometimes he checks if from the Far East -- Arizona -- while visiting Chicago Bob KC9AJY.
Night Owls
The Monday Night Net roll call check in list consists of; Night Owls, Visiting and Guest Night Owls, and Spotted Owls
Night Owls are those that have checked in regularly in the last 2 or 3 weeks and are welcome to check in anytime they have insomnia. They will be on the regular roll call "check in" list until they miss 2 consecutive nets. At that point they will be dropped from the regular roll call list until they once again check in as a guest or visitor. All new Night Owls are added to the bottom of the list and move up the list as older night owls leave the nest. We do this to keep the size of the list manageable and keep the length of the net under an hour.
Visitor and Guest Night Owls are those that are not on the regular Monday Night roll call list and wish to check in with or without answers. If you are late and did not hear the questions, you are encouraged to; ask for a reading of the questions, take someone else's answers, or just ask for a check in. At this time you will be added to the regular list of Night Owls and will be called the on the next Monday Night Net.
Spotted Owls are considered endangered species and Spotted Owl Awards given to those that get all their answers wrong. It is a polite way of telling people they blew it.
MONTHLY AWARDS
Monthly awards have been discontinued for lack of time.At the end of every month those with a significant number of correct answers will receive special recognition both on the net and on this web site. Those with the most correct answers will be recognized as the Spectacled Night Owl of the month. Those that declare and strive for low answers will be recognized as the Burrowing Night Owl of the month. If you fail to get any questions correct on any night, you will get the Spotted Owl Award.
